NOTE: Many of the operations covered in the 3-part MARK V Tune-Up Series cannot be adequately explained in this e-mail - or require a number of photos and/or illustrations for a thorough understanding.

For that reason, we recommend that you refer to the Maintenance section of your MARK V Owner's Manual for a full explanation. If you don't have an Owner's Manual, contact Customer Services TOLL-FREE at 1-800-543-7586 to order a copy.

Beyond occasional cleaning and lubrication, the Shopsmith MARK V is a practically maintenance-free machine. However, to maintain its optimal performance, a few very simple procedures are required from time-to-time. Here's the first of three parts on what we suggest:

Cleaning The MARK V

As you know, woodworking creates loads of fine dust and debris that can get into every nook-and-cranny. As you also realize, dust is an extremely efficient collector of moisture...which creates rust....which...

Translation: Woodworking creates dust...which collects moisture... which creates rust...which DESTROYS machinery!

The solution to this dilemma is...quite simply...
Keep ALL of your machinery CLEAN!

It's just common sense that the cleaner you keep your machinery, the more efficiently it will perform for you - and the longer it will last. So, spend a little time NOW and save big problems later. Here's what we suggest.

  • Every time you finish using your MARK V for the day:
    • Use an air compressor to blow the dust off .... or a shop vacuum (or Dust Collector) to remove the dust from all exterior surfaces
    • Remove dust from inside of Dust Chutes
    • Use an Abrasive Cleaning Stick to clean your Sandpaper Discs & Belts
    • Remove any heavy pitch or resin build-up from Blades, Bits or Cutters so they're ready to go to work the next time you need them
  • Every five hours of running time (or monthly):
    • Remove the Belt Cover and blow out the interior of the Headstock
    • Clean Miter Gauge slots & underneath Table Insert
    • Clean the Quill Racks (inside & outside of Headstock)
    • Remove Table and clean Table Post Racks
    • Remove grease or grime from Way Tubes with mineral spirits

If you're having problems with your Shopsmith MARK V, start by referring to the Troubleshooting Chart in your Owner's Manual. If you are unable to find the solution to your problem there...or of you don't have an Owner's Manual, please feel free to call our TOLL-FREE Technical Services Hotline at 1-800-762-7555 for assistance.
