NOTE: Many of the operations covered in the 3-part MARK V Tune-Up Series cannot be adequately explained in this e-mail - or require a number of photos and/or illustrations for a thorough understanding.

For that reason, we recommend that you refer to the Maintenance section of your MARK V Owner's Manual for a full explanation. If you don't have an Owner's Manual, contact Customer Services TOLL-FREE at 1-800-543-7586 to order a copy.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Clean all parts to be lubricated before lubricating them !

Beyond occasional cleaning and lubrication, the Shopsmith MARK V is a practically maintenance-free machine. However, to maintain its optimal performance, a few very simple procedures are required from time-to-time. Here's the second of three parts on what we suggest:

Lubrication & Waxing The MARK V:

Although all of your MARK V's bearings are shielded and permanently lubricated (requiring no lubrication), several other parts of your machine do require periodic lubrication. Here's a list:

Lubrication:

Item to be lubricated Interval / Operating Time Lubricate with
Floating Sheaves (pulleys)
10 Hrs
10w30 non-detergent motor oil
Headstock Lock threads
50 Hrs
Powdered graphite
Drill Chuck
10 Hrs
Powdered graphite

Waxing:
NOTE: In all cases, the only wax that should be used is a high-quality Furniture PASTE Wax.

Following application, wax should always be buffed-out, since accumulations of un-buffed wax can attract dust and impede moving parts.

(All items in table below to be waxed every 5 hours of operating time)

Item to be waxed Tip
Main & Extension Table surfaces; Miter Gauge Bar & Table slots; Main & Extension Table Support Tubes; Table Tube mounting holes in Carriage, Headrest & Base Arm; Rip Fence faces; Bench Tubes (none)
Main & Extension Table Support Tubes After waxing, brush Tubes to remove all residue from the Racks prior to re-assembly.
Quill Extend the Quill as far as it will go, lock it in place, THEN wax it. Then brush Rack with stiff brush to remove all wax residue
Way Tubes NOTE: Don't slide the Headstock or Carriage over recently applied wax prior to buffing. Wax could accumulate inside Headstock/Carriage and impede movement.
