Tip #251
Taking the bump & bounce out of your turnings
Good lathe turning results come from smooth, consistent cutting. When your lathe tool rest has nicks and gouges in it's top surface…and the square edges on the backs of certain chisels keep getting caught in them as you attempt to smoothly glide from one end to the other…it can be very frustrating.
To solve this problem, start by filing the top surface of your tool rest straight and true….eliminating all nicks and gouges along the way. Next, use a fairly coarse sharpening stone to slightly round-over the two back 90o corner edges that will be riding against the rest during cutting.
These two tweaks should help make your turning go more smoothly.
