Work at a slow speed and use only enough feed pressure
to keep the file cutting. Keep the work firmly on the
table so it won't lift on the file's upstroke.

You can
mount machine files in your jigsaw. These files are available
in a variety of shapes, so that you can smooth the edges on
the interior or exterior of almost any pattern.
When using
a metal file, run the jigsaw at "Slow" speed. Feed the work
gently against the file and keep the workpiece moving constantly
(Figure 16-41).
When you're finished, clean the table and lower chuck, and
brush off the machine thoroughly to remove all metal filings.
You can
use machine files to smooth the edges of wood, but use very
light pressure. Otherwise, the files "load up" quickly. Sawdust
becomes impacted between the grooves and must be cleaned out
frequently.
