Tip #220
To hold or not to hold….?

WANT TO KEEP SCREWS FROM BACKING-OUT ?

1: Mash the threads prior to insertion by laying the screw on a solid, heavy metal surface and flattening the threads with a hammer.

OR

2: Notch the threads with a cold chisel by laying the screw on a piece of wood…tapping it lightly with a hammer to keep it from rolling…then positioning your cold chisel edge perpendicular to the threads and striking it firmly with a hammer .

WANT TO LOOSEN RUSTY, STUBBORN OLD SCREWS ?

Apply a hot soldering gun or iron to the screw head. The metal will expand…then, as it cools and contracts, the screw will usually get loose enough to be withdrawn.
