Maintaining Bench Vise jaw alignment

Most Bench Vises have mechanisms and wooden jaws that won't maintain their parallel alignment when you have to grasp a narrow workpiece at one end or the other…and need a solid, tight grip for the operation you have in mind.

To avoid this problem, place a (same width or thickness) piece of scrap from your workpiece within the jaws' grip at their opposite end. This simple practice will hold the jaws parallel, allowing you to crank the jaws down as tightly as may be required without the risk of slippage.
