Selecting lumber for strength

The next time you're building a project where strength is an issue (bookshelf, workbench, deck, etc), remember that the wood you select for the job could play as important a role in its durability as the way it's made.

When building the load-bearing components for these types of projects, always look for STRAIGHT-GRAINED woods without knots or other defects. These woods are much stronger than uneven grained woods with large knots and similar defects.
