Preventing canned compounds from solidifying

Opening a can of paint or supposedly soft compound such as glazing or putty, only to discover that it's harder than the proverbial brick bat is less than ideal.

To prevent this, cut a small piece of plastic wrap, aluminum foil, or waxed paper to fit inside your can and lay on top of the contained material. This will keep the air away from the surface of the contents and help to keep it soft and in a non-hardened state until you need it.
